City & Culture

The sea, the rich natural resources, traditional enterprises, such as salt production, fishing and growing olives have shaped the character of the landscape and the local people. Distance was replaced by nearness: nearness of the sea, the people, cultures and countries. Due to the exceptional position and diverse landscape, everything really is nearby.

Treasures of the local natural and cultural heritage are guarded by the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park and Strunjan Nature Park. Up on the high hills of the hinterland, there are several picturesque villages that are known for their premium olive oil and excellent vegetables and fruit. It is no wonder that even the most demanding gourmets enjoy the local cuisine.

Our vibrant and diverse community offers delicious cuisines from the Mediterranean. Here you’ll find intimate theaters and galleries, gourmet markets, craft fairs, maker spaces, and many other spots that are off the beaten path.

The Piran Salt Pans are among those rare salt pans in the world where salt is produced using centuries-old processes, involving entirely natural crystallisation, working by hand and employing tools and procedures used by our ancestors. The harvest only depends on the forces of nature - of the sun, wind, sea, and the assiduous work of the salt pan workers. The salt from the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is light, rich in minerals of the sea, and of an exceptional taste that provides dishes with extra culinary exceptionalness.

At THE LEPA VIDA THALASSO SPA guests are offered a special experience of traditional thalassotherapy in a unique natural environment amidst the salt pans using natural products, produced in the Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park. Salt-pan mud and brine are the most important factors of thalassotherapy, which uses the beneficial effects of the sea products, the sea shore and the climate for boosting the immune system and improving overall health.

Piran Musical Evenings is an international festival of chamber music held in the Slovene coastal town of Piran. Launched in 1978, it is the oldest festival of chamber music in Slovenia. It traditionally takes place in the cloister of the old Franciscan Monastery in Piran. It is sometimes also held in Tartini Theatre or in the Church of St Francis, with the organ concerts being held in St George's Church. The performances present classical choral works, sometimes diversified by opera or even flamenco works.
